Procedural generation is pretty neat. It's up to you to explore it! Make a tool that can algorithmically generate textures, worlds, and any other 2D pattern of your choosing. We'll take a look at it and stick your pattern onto some fancily printed items, shipped right to your door.

What is Hack Club Greeble?

Greeble is a Hack Club You Ship We Ship program. You Ship a project to a theme, in this case a procedural pattern generator. In return, We Ship you a prize. For Greeble, we'll print the pattern of your program on stickers, T-shirts, and more!

What counts as a "procedural pattern generator"?

Any tool that generates a 2D image based on a set of programmatic rules. Your tool must also abide by Greeble's requirements listed below. For instance, the neat patterns above are pixels, drawn to an image, based on some simple rules relating to surrounding pixels. As long as your idea meets these criteria, there are few restrictions!

Maybe you'll make a tool to generate image textures for your Blender models. Maybe you'll auto-generate an elaborate pixel-based world with biomes and elevations factored in. Maybe you'll make a neat little abstract pattern that looks really cool. Up to you!

What are Greeble's requirements for shipped projects?

The output from your program must:

• Be completely generated by code
• Be able to be generated to an indefinite size
• Output to a 2D image. Feel free to have GUI previews or similar, but your program must be able to export to an image.
• Contain at least four (4) different parameters for the user to configure. Feel free to have as many as you would like, though!
• Abide by Hack Club's Code of Conduct

How do I track my time?

You will track your time using Hackatime, Hack Club's online platform for just this purpose.

How do I claim prizes?

After you finish a project, you can ship it in the dashboard. After you review it, you will receive Squares (▫) in relation to the hours you've spent on the project. You can spend these squares in the dashboard on any of the printed items, and suggest new ones in the Slack channel!

Who can participate?

Any teenager 13-18 (inclusive).

Is this legit?

Yep! Greeble is part of Hack Club, a 501(c) nonprofit whose mission is to get teenagers into programming.

What does the word 'Greeble' mean?

A greeble is a little detail put on a model to add some visual complexity. The sides of the Death Star trench for instance, covered in all sorts of little greebly bits.
